ICYMI : Impact of Social Media

In a culture where young people are defined by their social media presence, the pressure to be perfect and the temptation to objectify & compare is at an all-time high. Too often, social media becomes anti-social and isolating – negating its intended purpose of building human connection. The Culture Project missionaries are inspiring thousands of young people towards a virtuous use of social media and inviting them to a culture of real friendship and affirmation. Their message of hope is desperately needed!

• Globally, only 11% of girls would call themselves beautiful (Dove)
  Approx. 34% of middle and high school students (age 12-17) report they have been a victim of cyberbullying (cyberbullying.org)
• Between 2007 and 2015, the suicide rate increased 31% for teen boys and doubled for teen girls, according to the centers for disease control and prevention
• Each day in our nation, there are an average of over 5,400 suicide attempts by young people grades 7-12 (American Society for the positive care of children)
• In the US alone, suicide results in approximately 4600 lives lost each year, making it the third leading cause of death for 10-24 year-olds (American Society for the positive care of children)
• 20% of American youth will experience some degree of depression (national institute of mental health)
• Diagnosis of major depression have risen dramatically by 33 percent since 2013. This rate is rising even faster among millennials (up 47 percent) and adolescents (up 47 percent for boys and 65 percent for girls). –Bluecross Blue Shield Association 2018 Report
